HOW TO RECOVER DATA FROM CD/DVD?

It has happened to all of us more than once. A CD or DVD of music, video games, personal files, suddenly begins to fail. The reader gets stuck and refuses to read the content.

Perhaps the CD and DVD is scratched. Or maybe, thanks to its poor quality, the magnetic layer has deteriorated. Before you throw it away, there are a couple of things which will be done to undertake and recover data from the CD or DVD. Do not panic!

How to Recover Files from a Damaged Disk

When a CD or DVD fails, it is due to one of three causes: The reader lens is dirty, the disc is dirty, or the surface of the disc is damaged. Let's start at the beginning

Dirty Disc

If a disc cannot be read, the most common cause is that it is dirty because of fingers, dust, liquids. The first step is to clean the disc with a cloth or a specialized cleaning brush. Clean with a cloth from top to bottom, that is, from the center to the edges, in a straight line. Don't make circles.

If the dirt is extremely stuck, we'll use warm water and a touch mild soap or baby shampoo, and wash the disc with a cloth. Yes, it can be wet with water, but when drying it you have to leave it in the air, you don't have to rub it with the cloth.

Copy Protection Issues

Sometimes the copy protection of some discs causes read errors in overly sensitive readers. This is quite common with some Blu-ray movies, but it also happens with games.

If only one album gives you problems and it seems fine, become suspicious. Sometimes it's solved by updating the firmware of the Blu-ray player, or that of the console. If it continues to give problems, you should go to the store where you bought it and have it changed, or tested.

Reader Problems

If the disc is clean and has no marks, but the reader does not read it, do not rule out the possibility that the reader fails. The key point is to ascertain if just one disk or several fails. If there are several, it's presumably that the lens is dirty, because some dust has entered. You will have to use a cleaning disc, but be careful, there are cleaning discs for CD / DVD and Blu-ray, they are different.

It usually comes with a cleaning fluid that is placed in a head on the disc. It is introduced into the reader and left for a couple of minutes. Not all readers are an equivalent, so not just any cleaning disc will do. In the case of consoles, you have to make sure that it is compatible.

If the cleaning disk cannot fix the problem, the reader will have to be repaired.

Damaged Disk

When the disc features a mark or wound, cleaning it's not enough. Both CDs and DVDs have a layer of protection on top of the info layer, which is that the one that tends to urge scratched. If we reduce the damage, the reader will ignore that tear, it will read the data and we can recover files from a damaged CD or DVD. Blu-ray discs have a stronger protection layer so they are more difficult to damage, but the data layer is closer to the surface: if they are scratched they will be very difficult to repair.

There are many homemade tricks that work. We recommend using them only as a final resort, when all else fails. They only work with CD / DVD, not with Blu-ray, which as we have said have a different layer of protection.

The protection layer is made of polycarbonate, and if it is scratched it can deflect the reflection of the laser, that is why reading errors appear even if the data is correct. But being a plastic, substances can be used to repair that layer.

Repair Liquid: It's a special paste that's applied with a cloth, filling the scratches. Some people use non-grainy toothpaste, butter, car polish wax, even a banana, dense liquids that contain some kind of oil but don't scratch, to fill within the damaged area and allow the laser to reflect on her when she reads the data. It is risky but if you are desperate. At the end you have to clean the disc with water and a cloth and let it air dry.

Magic Sponges: There are some magic cleaning sponges that clean surfaces without using products, you just have to wet them and drain them. They work well with discs, but you've got to form sure they're soft, which they are doing not contain any product. If you use them you don't have to rub hard.

Heat: If the scratch is small, a good trick is to apply heat to the disc's protective layer. Polycarbonate becomes moldable very quickly, so you've got to show on a light-weight bulb for a couple of minutes until it's hot, then bring the disk closer for 15 to 20 seconds. Hopefully the damage are going to be diluted, but if you go overboard you'll load the disc.

Polishing Machines: These repair machines lightly smooth the protective layer, softening scratches. But they are only profitable if you spoil a lot of discs. If it is not of quality, it can produce more harm than good. There are music stores that allow you to use their professional polishing machine for small money.
