What is Microsoft Exchange Server?
Microsoft Exchange
Server is a messaging system that includes a mail server, an electronic mail
program (email client), and workgroup applications.
It was designed for use
in a business environment, the Exchange server is often used in conjunction
with Microsoft Outlook to take advantage of Outlook's collaboration features,
such as the ability to share calendars and contact lists.
Microsoft Exchange Server has two main purposes:

supports POP3, IMAP, and, EAS.
2. It

EDB is known as Exchange

makes use of the Extensible Storage Engine in order to access your data. This
EDB file includes all the data components such as email messages, folders, and
attachments.

EDB is the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) (EDE) database file, it
stores all mailbox data including messages, emails, contacts, calendars, tasks,
notes and journals.

Extensible Storage Engine (ESE). It is sometimes called JET Blue.
It is used by Exchange Server to store and retrieve EDB data.
§
It stores messages send by MAPI clients. Additionally, SMTP and
HTTP messages are stored in this rich text database.

The Exchange database is made up of one or more B-trees for quick
access.

It uses two folders private folders (priv1.edb) and public folder (pub1.edb)
§
Exchange Server 2007/2010 introduced the mailbox database. EDB
instead of priv1.edb and the public folder database. EDB instead of pub1.edb.
Additionally, the STM file was removed from Exchange 2007.
§
Exchange Server 2013 combined the private and public folder into
one file named Mailbox Database Name.
§
Recovery mode: The EDB file can be repaired by the ESEUTIL and
ISINTEG command line utilities
